Welcome to Oakwood

Oakwood is an established international early-childhood school in Tokyo, providing a stimulating, English-language learning environment for children from nursery through early elementary. For the past seven years, we have built a diverse and welcoming community where children are encouraged to be curious, ask questions, explore their interests, and develop as confident, capable learners.

Our approach is grounded in the principles of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), with learning built around inquiry, play, and meaningful experiences. Rather than simply delivering information to children, our teachers act as guides and learning partners, encouraging children to take an active role in their learning, develop their agency, and make connections between what they discover at school and the world around them.

As a fully recognized ninkagai preschool, Oakwood is eligible for local childcare subsidies while maintaining an international community of educators and staff. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, respected, and valued, and we strive to create an environment where every child can develop their own strengths, interests, and sense of belonging.

"Play is the highest form of research." – Albert Einstein

At Oakwood Tokyo International School, we welcome children from 10 months to Grade 2, providing a seamless and nurturing learning journey from our Nursery through the Primary Years. As an IB Candidate School, we deliver an engaging, child-centered program inspired by the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), fostering curiosity, creativity, and global-mindedness in a supportive environment where children learn and grow through purposeful play. Our dedicated educators use a thoughtful scaffolding approach to English language development, meeting each child at their individual level and building the confidence and communication skills needed to thrive at any international elementary school—including our own. As proud members of the Tokyo Association of International Preschools (TAIP), we are committed to offering a high-quality educational experience that inspires independence, inquiry, and a lifelong love of learning.
